KEYNOTE: The Future of Global Learning: Innovating to Transform Education for All

To thrive in today’s world, children and young people need a wide range of skills rooted in quality education. New technologies are transforming learning and jobs. Climate change is requiring industries to adapt, demanding a deep understanding and application of green skills. At the same time, millions of children in the most vulnerable communities around the world cannot access education due to global shocks such as conflict, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change. Lack of digital connectivity is preventing the most vulnerable children from learning and opportunities. However, with bold leadership and commitment, progress in transforming education for every child is possible.

Education beyond complexity
Learning is an interactive process between the learner and the world. When the world changes, the relationship between the world and the learner changes. Schools should enable this direct connection between the student and the world, taking the developmental phase of the student into consideration.
It is aspirational to live in harmony with oneself, one’s fellow human beings and the planet. Schools and education systems should be able to support this aspiration, even in a complex and changing world. To do so requires us to reflect deeply, to reimagine what it means to grow into humanity in our times, and what the purpose of school is in supporting that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder: The subjectiveness of the ‘Great Teacher’
“She is a great teacher”. Such reputations are commonplace in schools and imply a universal consensus to a highly subjective concept. Drawing on a combination of academic research and extensive experience of school leadership, this session examines the importance of contextual factors such as cultural values and curriculum priorities in shaping judgements of teacher quality. It encourages audience members to consider why (and how) their beliefs about the qualities of a good teacher may contrast with those of others, and why a teacher may struggle in one context but flourish in another.

Ethical GDP
Developed economies nowadays have shifted their economic policy-making focus from achieving solely economic growth to achieving economic development. This new revolution in policy-making has led to multiple countries boasting better standards of living. However, the most important question one must consider is how this standard of living is measured. In a world where GDP per capita is the primary indicator of a country’s standard of living, a statistical failure looms due to the unrepresentative nature of GDP per capita as an accurate indicator of economic well-being. I will discuss GDP alternatives which are a more representative measure of economic well-being, while exploring the idea of how relevancy could be shifted to these well-being figures.

Systems Leadership and Radical Imagination: Educating for Just Futures at UWC Atlantic
As multiple global crises unfold and converge, young people are calling out for an education that affirms the possibility of more just, equitable and regenerative futures. In response, a small team from UWC Atlantic and the International Baccalaureate came together for an extraordinary project: to build and give young people the education they have been telling us they need in order to survive, lead and thrive in the climate-changed world they are inheriting.

At the heart of this new IB Diploma Programme model is a transdisciplinary, exam-free, collaborative, team-taught and action-oriented course - the Systems Transformation Pathway: Leadership for Just Futures. Our inaugural cohort of 24 students and 4 teachers are the first and currently only ones in the world piloting this new IBDP model. Join this session to hear what it looks like, in practice, to be part of pioneering a new vision for global education.

AI and the educational paradigm shift: One school's response
Our learners face an uncertain future. Rapid technological advancement and the rise of AI in particular, mean that the world in 2050 will undoubtedly be a very different place to work and live. Social and cultural notions of the concept of future have placed an overwhelming emphasis on technological advancement, which means that more and better technology in schools is often cited as the future-proofing solution. This session will argue that this approach is misguided and that schools can make the biggest impact in future proofing our learners by reimagining learning spaces to better suit a skills-focused curriculum.

No True Education Without Free Expression: What the Chicago Tradition Offers
Is education simply placing pearls of wisdom by a teacher who has mastered a subject into the willing and eager receptacle of the student’s mind, or is it something more? Is it the sharing of given nuggets of knowledge, or is it the transformative process of learning how knowledge flourishes while deepening one’s grasp and understanding of various disciplines?  Since its founding, the University of Chicago has anchored its approach to education on teaching the how not the what, and on the idea that to successfully do so, absolute freedom of inquiry and expression must be the anchor value. The results speak for themselves: a relatively young university that has produced nearly 100 Nobel Prizes in fields ranging from economics to chemistry, physics to peace. This session will offer an overview of the Chicago tradition of free inquiry and expression and what it offers for the field of education.

STEM - Integrating strategies in IB Groups 4 to reflect and respect international learners
International schools which adopt the IB program, pride themselves on with having students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Therefore, it is paramount that they reflect this pride in how they deliver an IB education by placing their diversity of cultures at the centre of their learning. This session will ask participants to consider: How can we develop, implement, and maintain intentional inclusive strategies so that all stakeholders within the IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) are in a thriving and inclusive environment? How can we encourage critical thinking and engagement within the whole school environment regarding the diversity of cultures we come from? With the goal to encourage schools and other educational institutions to look inward, recognise areas of improvement and take action when it comes to these aspects we hope to help participants to achieve and execute the right mindset inside and outside of the classroom for the betterment of their students and themselves.

Artificial Intelligence has evolved in a very fast-paced and exponential way during the last few months. According to Mo Gawdat, former CBO (Chief Business Officer) at Google, ChatGPT 4.5 is estimated to reach an IQ of 155 (Einstein had about 160). The intelligence shown by AI has not been programmed per se but has developed itself inside of the artificial neural networks. So, the evolution of Artificial Intelligence may give us incredible glimpses on how our human neural networks work, and how we can improve them. This conference will cover some discoveries made in the last few years about AI, and how those discoveries may help us improve ourselves as humans.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom - or Seven Deadly Sins? - Tell me the truth about 21st-century education
Where do our ideas about “progressive” international education come from?

Seven of the pillars of debate (including Bloom's Taxonomy, Cognitive Load Theory, Inquiry-based Learning, Student Agency and Constructivism) may be wise but are they evidence-based?

Are some mere groupthink leading to uncritical acceptance of contemporary ideology, pushing schools, like businesses, to “innovate”, to “shift the paradigm”, and to “disrupt”.

Moving fast and breaking things may not serve education and may instead pander to the interests of IT companies, consultants and publishers.

International schools often challenge a straw-man status quo; it may instead be time to challenge our definition of “progress”.

How to assess pastoral care?
On the surface, this seems rather simplistic when in fact it is not. Should we refer to tangible parameters only? Which ones? What about observations? If I refer to my experience, the appraisal system never included the students' opinions. Should they be included? Some describe student voice as an empty jug or a portmanteau term, while others believe that the feedback from the students (acting as the expert witnesses) to the right educational outcome, has the potential to provide useful lessons to pastoral leaders and enable school improvement. If so, how do we best harness it?

I will be using my recent research for my dissertation (MSc - Educational Leadership; University of Leicester), and my professional experience as well as literature to moderate the discussion on this topic of major importance for all the stakeholders of education: school leaders, teachers, children, their parents, as well as prospective parents.
